The recent crisis of Swine flu that barged in on us led many people search for protective measures that can prevent them from airborne particles and hence elude from the disease. Then a buzz about the word for surgical N95 mask as a 3M respirator which was cleared by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a surgical mask and certified by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) having a capacity to filter up to 95% of the airborne particles was there.
A device protecting the wearer from inhaling harmful fumes, gases, vapours and dust is called a respirator mask. With broadly classified into two categories as an air purifying respirator, which passes the contaminated air through a filtering material and the air supplies respirator, which has an alternate supply of fresh air into it. The term 95, 99, 100 refers to 95%, 99%, 99.7% filtration respectively. Usually, all the respirators masks are approved by the NIOSH and have followed markings on them: Manufacturer's name, the part number (P/R/N), Protection provided by the filter (e.g. N95, R99.) and NIOSH with its logo. And some may even have approval number of the NIOSH as an additional marking for identification. These certified models can be checked on NIOSH. Generally, this kind of filter remove the particles by using certain waxes, resins, and plastics as coatings on the filter material to attract particles with an electrostatic charge that holds them on the surface of the filter material or by using gravity which allows the particles to settle in the filter material.

Particulate Respirators problems?
I work in a factory, and for 5-6 hours straight, I constantly breathe through a 3M particulate respirator (fancy talk for a thick white breathing mask, the kind used by blue collar-types the world over). I've recently noticed a great loss in lung strength, and I now easily become short of breath, which is both surprising and worrying, since I have been a runner for a long time. There are other factors, such as living in a house with a couple of smokers (though I do not smoke), but I have lived with them for years, and the onset of this problem is too sudden for me to think that that is the cause.
