Some Things You Should Know When Selecting Your Sheets
When it comes to buying sheets there are more things to really think about rather than just the thread count. There are so many options about materials and even sheets that deal with allergies that you do need to consider different things before you buy. So here are the things you should know when selecting your sheets.
First of all you should perhaps consider the materials that are available on the market. The most common are going to be cotton based but you do have it mixed with other materials creating sheets made out of a poly cotton blend or other completely natural fibres. However when it comes to cotton sheets the type that is seen as being the best is Egyptian cotton as it is regarded as being of a higher quality and smoother.
Sheets that are made from a poly cotton blend are not as able to absorb moisture and they do not breathe the same as normal cotton sheets. They are generally much cheaper than full cotton as they are a lot cheaper to produce but they are of a lower quality but then you do get varying qualities of cotton so the price really can vary a great deal.
You can also get a type of sheet called a flannelette sheet or sometimes also known as brushed cotton. These are more for the colder months as they are a lot thicker and feel more luxurious and able to really keep in the heat much better than normal cotton.
One thing to be wary about though is that manufacturers can be very careful when it comes to the labeling of their sheets. They know that people look for terms such as Egyptian cotton so they are quick to proclaim that this is the cotton used but on closer inspection you can discover that it is a very small percentage and cheaper cotton is the main type.
While these are the more normal varieties of sheets that you can purchase it should be mentioned that you are also able to get some which deal with allergies so the sufferer can get a much better nights sleep. These are available from a number of different companies and they are generally classified as hypoallergenic sheets.
People can be allergic to the bed mites that exist in every single bed but these sheets work as a real barrier between the mite and what is basically its food source which is tiny particles from your skin amongst other things. It is made extremely difficult for them to get through from the mattress to you as you lie there which means you can wake up not feeling as terrible as you normally do.
So the things you should know when selecting your sheets are really twofold. The material used is perhaps the biggest one and only a few types have been mentioned here as you have rarer ones such as silk or satin but they are more specialized whilst the hypoallergenic sheets may also be an option even on a trial period if you are unsure about the potential of you being allergic to things while you sleep.

Hurting ears on a 2yr old?
My son is always complaining his ear is hurting - always his left ear. I have taken him to the GP who insists everythig is fine (after a brief inspection) when I clean his ears with cotton buds there's a lot wax and it doesn't seem to make him feel any better. He's not a child that says he's in pain when he isn't. He is always rubbing / poking his ear now & it's really irritating him.
I thought it was a behavioural thing at first but I'm becoming more concerned. Any tips?

My ears always hurt when my allergies are acting up (or I have a sinus infection). He could have fluid in his ear (behind his eardrum) that is not infected but causing pressure. A decongestant should help. My children have sensitive ears and the doctor recommended using a half and half solution of peroxide and warm water to flush the ears out about once a week to help get rid of the excess wax.
If you aren't getting satisfactory answers from the GP, you may opt to try a pediatrician, ENT (preferably pediatric) or an allergist.
